Cape Town – ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says his party is open to forming “grand coalitions” with other parties in a multi-party system.

Mbalula said this during a National Dialogue on Coalition Governments in Cape Town on Thursday.

Mbalula said that when there is no clear winner in an election, the party with the largest share of the vote should lead the coalition or municipality.

He said that the ANC is willing to work with political parties that are genuine and committed to stabilising municipalities and achieving service delivery and local development.

“We are also keen to explore grand coalitions in order to ensure stability, service delivery and local development,” Mbalula said.

He added: “The party that has won the largest vote should lead the coalition in that municipality and executive positions should be allocated in proportion to the votes obtained by coalition partners”.

Other parties, such as the Democratic Alliance, United Democratic Movement, and Al Jama ah, also presented their differing proposals during the dialogue.
