Cape Town – The EFF Students Command (EFFSC) has achieved a significant victory, winning eight out of 13 seats in the student representative council (SRC) at Wits University.

According to Times Live, Sihle Lonzi, the national president of EFFSC, said on Thursday that the protest indicated that students were beginning to lose faith in Sasco, the student movement aligned with the ANC, as an effective resolver of student issues.

“They [Sasco] are unable to be robust in their criticism of ANC ministers — and you know you can’t blame them as they are ANC members. It is difficult for the SRC president to say [higher education minister] Blade [Nzimande] must fall — and then go into an ANC meeting and say Blade must rise,” the report quoted Lonzi as saying.

The @EFFStudents @WitsEFF has reclaimed Wits. University and TVET College Students, intellectuals and the future of this country recognized the EFF as the only alternative. Let us all #RegisterToVoteEFF https://t.co/FiytU1naWe

He said that the outgoing SRC had failed to address issues such as accommodation and the National Students Financial Aid Scheme. This victory is seen as a sign that South African youth, particularly students, resonate with the message of economic freedom “in our lifetime.”

The president of the Wits SRC is chosen through a constituting meeting, not a direct ballot, and then the SRC elects its own executive and portfolios through an election process. This election result indicates that young people have a unified voice regarding economic transformation and education in the country.

Take a look at some of the reactions on social media:

They said EFF is party of uneducated angry fools. We know that EFF is a party of parents who are poor because they were denied education by Apartheid. Today their children voted for EFFSC to WIN Wits University SRC Elections. ✊🏿
